Augustus Firestone
(Australian)
|
Augustus Firestone is a classically trained painter who won an
Olsen scholarship to study art in Florence, Italy in 1995.
Firestone has an instinctual sense of colour and form, and painting
is obviously a medium in which he communicates without the pressure
of preconceived norms or opinion. His interpretation of landscapes,
whether it be here at home or visual records of his international
travels, captures the mood, scale and interrelationships of elements
that make up his surroundings.
Over the years he has expressed his art through a range of media
and techniques. Most recently Augustus has found that he is most
comfortable with painting sculptured relief.
Augustus Firestone commitment to the skilful use of paint and sculpture
has lead him to co-found with Aaron Frater the Finalism movement.

Frater (New Zealand) |
Aaron Frater, stone, bone,& wood carver, & painter (of
pictures & murals). I am primarily a carver, a maker
of 3-D objects. I have always carved , when I was
young I carved soap & pumice.Now I work with bone &
shell (I completed a craft design certificate about 20
years ago), stone, & wood. I have always drawn, when I
was young I used felt pens & student acrylic. Now I
work in pen, pencil, pastel, & oil & acrylic paints.
I have always been interested in depicting an iconic,
symbolic view of life. My art has always been about
creating a personal mythology.My carving & painting
allows me to create a world of magic & intrigue, of
sparkling images, of motion in static materials, of
peace & order, & an ever growing body of work
that
is a celebration of life.
I am a product of an upbringing steeped in the arts.
My step father was an art lecturer & painter.
My
father was in live theatre. From this I acquired a
love of the arts & crafts.
I grew up in Wellington, always being around
musicians, artist & academics. I have always created
my self, & most of my qualifications & job experience
is in creative disciplines. I am 38 now & am still
committed to a life of creativity & self expression.
Given my desire to express my vision of life & my
belief that art is the way to do this, I am commited
to the creative proccess & the creative way of life.
This is as much who I am , as what I do. Aaron

McGhie (New Zealand) |
PG Dip FA (Elam), Dip Teaching,
Cert Art & Design (Whitireia)
Full of warm and robust humour Titahi Bay artist & art educator
Davey McGhie sculptures in wood, stone and mixed media have appeared
at many of the countrys major symposia.
His visual language has emerged bold and chunky, elegant and sensitive,
acknowledging a respect for the materials. With a certain amount
of liberty and intuition visions arise and the artworks constantly
evolve. Davey has developed a style of his own that has roots from
living in the diverse, colourful Porirua community over the past
25 years.
Davey established a successful workshop in Wellington creating original
screen-printed and hand painted fabrics. Song writing, performance
and recording in ska rock bands and work in horticulture has been
a valuable experience in the continual reinvention and exploration
of his artworks.
Significantly self-taught Davey also completed a Post Graduate Diploma
in Fine Arts at Elam, University of Auckland in 1998. Davey was
tutored at Te Toi Hou by Selwyn Muru and Brett Graham. He gained
a Diploma of Teaching and Certificate of Art and Design at Whitireia.
Davey has since taught at Whitireia Community Polytechnic various
Wellington colleges and schools, Vincents Art Workshop, special
needs groups and Adult Community Education.
Davey values the notion of there being no right or wrong in contemporary
art making. His working process is a balance of various approaches
and techniques, enthusiastic burst of drawing, working out ideas
with the use of small maquettes.
Davey loves family, friends and fun, the sea, land, clouds, flowers,
trees, birds and animals a self confessed earthy dreamer. His great
pleasure is to glimpse the beauty of small everyday events, simple
things of life as they unfold. The joy and hope of their existence
inspires and challenges him to create a visible narrative a willingness
to invest in the full production of art making a mode of survival
to establish an identify and continuity in a fast changing world.
A recipient of 1st prize Festival of the Elements Recycled
Sculpture Competition 2005. His work is included in the Public Collection
at Pataka Porirua and private collections nationally. With solo
exhibitions and many group shows to his credit Davey has recently
worked at the Macs Nelson Sculpture Symposium, Wood Alive,
Takapuna and the Wellington International Arts Festival.

These sculptural paintings are part of a lifetime exploration of
the chemistry between material, instinctive process and inner life.
They are a part of my development of a style as a vehicle for meaningful
honest expression and some kind of purposeful communication. Sometimes
I think there are already too many objects in the world. While we
are rich in some ways I believe it is addressing the poverty of
Relationship which is the next great endeavour for humankind. We
have been growing in a way which has left something essential behind.
Now we are awakening and bringing our powers to bear. I am a profound
optimist.
I am in the process of learning to practise the art of connection
in all its various ways and so I like to learn from a material rather
than impose too heavily on it and consciously leave the work revealing
how its made.
No matter what medium, my attraction to natural and manmade sculptural
elements underpins what I do.

Glayzer (USA) |
Ive always been an artist, in spite of my social environment
and my family.
The first forty years of my life I was a performing artist, a triple
threat singer, dancer, and actor. I made my first vinyl record
when I was thirteen.
Im a culinary artist (working chef to those of you who dont
know what one is) who is also a web graphics artist and website
designer.
Ive published short stories and articles both in print and
on the internet, as well as being a staff writer for a commemorative
book company.
Somewhere in the middle of everything, I picked up a piece of Sculpey
to calm my nerves, and Ive been sculpting with that and other
mediums ever since. Ive always used acrylic paints to stain
my sculptures, and that was before I knew about Finalism.
Although Ive taken a couple of classes, Im primarily
self taught and rarely exhibit or part with any of my children.
I entered a miniature contest once and had one of my pieces on display
for thirty days at the San Bernardino County Museum.
Im presently galloping up to 62 years of age, and my goal
is to learn as much as I can in this life. I want to evoke emotion
and create things of beauty.

D. Sederberg(USA) |
Mollari D. Sederberg is an
award winning Northwest artist, making his home in Olympia, Washington.
Mollari has worked in various art mediums for over twenty years and
now has blazed the way for Poly-Steel Sculpture Mollari
was awarded third place in the sculpture category at the Fall-2000,
Affaire in the Gardens fine art show in Beverly Hills, California.
He has since exhibited in shows in Palm Springs, California and New
York City.
Mollaris self-taught, unique techniques and his use of these
special materials on his multi-faceted sculptures are unlike anything
in the world of art. His combinations of opaque and translucent colors,
plus special effect pigments that change in intensity and color used
in this process, creates a striking visual, not experienced in any
other art form. Photographs and slides do not come close to capturing
the depth and movement in these sculptures. When viewed in real life,
these pieces are commonly mistaken as glass. This is a new medium
with uncharted possibilities. Website http://www.mollariart.com/

Graham (New Zealand) |
I have painted for fun for some years but without suitable guidance
I found my progression was limited. I spent an enriching year at
Whitireia and am now furthering my skill base and understanding
of paint and surface. I work at home in my studio "The
Dungeon", and artists inspirational to me are early modernists,
The American School and our rich pool of New Zealand abstract artists,
past and present.
Colour relationships, luminosity and an underlying geometric structure
are of primary importance in my approach, and the work often reflects
my interest in the convergence of spiritual thought and theoretical
physics. The constant recycling of the matter that forms us and
the fact that we are primarily space fascinates me. I often reflect
this by painting on found objects.
Many of my paintings reflect the geometrical ratios that are
inherent in much of nature and the perfect balance they create.
Once a design is finalised it is transferred to board and the carving
can begin to bring a three dimensional aspect to the final product.
The regimented carving is often in stark contrast to a more whimsical
approach to the painting. I often hang my paintings in one or more
grids to emphasise the constructivist nature of my approach and
as a metaphor for the crossroads we navigate with the decisions
we make, opening some doors closing others.
An exploration of the stillness between thoughts and the layers
and filters between surface perception and truth, I imagine my paintings
having a meditative function. I particularly relate to a quote of
Wynstan Curnow's that "imagination and perception are
not distinct" and used it in the title of a piece I completed
for the Wellington City Council. I have exhibited at Pataka
as part of the Whitireia Polytechnic's Visual Arts programme selling
both pieces into private collections and also sold work through
the Affordable Art Show.

like to accept accidents
from the natural World into my work. Some times a curve can be smoothly
produced by a single gestural stroke but sometimes I like to laboriously
produce a curve in increments so I can exercise more control over
the resulting shapes. This can sometimes seem hesitant. I sometimes
like hesitancy.

| Stefan
Hall (New Zealand) |
Many of us are visual
learners and visual communicators we benefit greatly from visual
clues as well as (very importantly) hands on experience. Take a minute
to think about how much of what you learn is through spoken language?
How much of that spoken language is reinforced by visible body language?
When having a conversation with someone think about facial expressions,
eye contact, posture, and hand gestures. Body language is very important
for communicating with Deaf people. Visual cues can become artistic
expression as a very effective means of communication.
I have enjoyed a wide range of art since I was a kid. Art, visual
communication and hands-on experience is extremely important for Deaf
people. One of the reasons Im here at The Learning Connexion
is because my parents supported and nourished my vision of helping
others discover their creativity. I have 7 years experience in the
design and visual communication industry. I am now working with deaf
students extramurally and developing more visual, Deaf-friendly material.
I love working with the vast possibilities here at TLC.
Stefan was born profoundly deaf. Through help from his parents and
role models like Steve Waugh, a former Australian Cricketer who has
been involved in charities and lives life with determination and enjoyment,
Stefan embraces lifes challenges.
He is a graduate of both the National College of Design and Technology
in Christchurch and School of Design at Wellington Polytechnic where
he completed the Advanced Diploma of Visual Communications and Diploma
of Multimedia. He went on to work in Graphic Design, advertising,
and photography.
He is married to a wonderful woman and has 2 boys (3yr old and 6 months

Karen Collins Reinert(USA)
|
Most of what I learned about being an artist came from the fact
that my Dad (international sculptor Jim Collins) was a Fine Arts
professor at the University of Chattanooga in Tennessee while I
was growing up. Challenged and critiqued everyday on my drawings,
paintings and sculpture by Dad made me thick skinned which every
Artist needs. He always insisted on not looking at anything therefore
pulling images directly from my subconscious mind. It was kind of
like having a college arts education by the age of twelve.
I did earn a degree in Advertising Art in 1988, hoping to work and
make money by creating. I quickly became bored in that field due
to the lack of raw creative expression, so I began to form a body
of work mostly on paper that was shown in 1989. My work has evolved
from simply drawing to painting and the past eight years I have
concentrated on my painted sculpture. All of these sculptures are
original as I never duplicate an image. My theme is the female form
that is inspired by books, music, pop art or nature. I love Folk
Art and try to inject a little bit of the whimsical personality
in each piece.
A locale dealer here in Chattanooga at Tanner Hill Art Gallery carries
my novel, carved and painted cedar works to various trade shows
around the country. I built Moon Bend Art Gallery in 2004 where
folks can come by and see or purchase all types of artwork Ive
created over the years.

| Guido
Vedovato(Italy) |
Guido Vedovato
Biography
Guido Vedovato was born in 1961 in the north of Italy. Self-taught,
he progressively became, in the 1970s, a naïve painter and sculptor,
it started as a hobby then he became more and more professional. His
first exhibition was in 1986. Today, his works are exhibited widely
in Italy of course, but also in many other countries in Europe, the
United States, and Canada.
Its paints are inspired by life's scenes, peoples, animals of the
mountains where he has been living for longtime, and they are made
with oil on big-size canvas, with a very original style which cannot
be absolutely classified among any existing naive paint-school or
paint-style.
About its sculptures, he has a predilection for primitive wodden or
terracotta figures, raw or coloured too, with shapes ascribable to
the traditional and popular sculpture of the north-eastern alpine
area of Italy.
His works are acquired by the following museums:
Museum of Naive Art in Jagodina Serbia,
National Naive Art Museum Cesare Zavattini Italy,
Bages International Naive Art Museum France,
Slovenian Naive Art Museum in Trebnje Slovenia,
MAN Naive Art Museum Béraut France,
International Naive Art Museum Spain,
International Naive Art Museum Y. M. Daigle Canada,
Vihorlatske Muzeum Humenné Slovak Republic,
MIDAN International Naive Art Museum Vicq France,
Musée dArt Spontané, Brussels Belgium,
